Triming Dwarf burning bush

Question
What is the correct way to trim/prune a dwarf burning bush?  I would like to make it shorter and not so big around.  Can I use a hedge trimmer or is this a totally bad idea?
-Karl

Answer
Karl,
Hedge trimmers can be used, but I would not recommend it. Leaf damage and twig can be caused by the trimmers, which can lead to premature fall coloration and stress. I would recommend useing hand clippers and removing brances back to the main limb or leader. This will also help to open up the plant and discourage eriophiad mites from damaging the leaves.
The best time to do this pruning is in the early spring before the leaves emerge. It will be easier to see where the branches go and you can choose the longest to shorten to a lateral.
