White powdery mold?

Question
I live in Southeast Michigan where recently we remulched the areas around our shrubs with a thick layer of cedar mulch with a brick barrier. I noticed yesterday a white powdery mold-looking substance growing near the bottom of one of the shrubs, along the top of the mulch and on one of the bricks on two different ends of the flower bed.  We currently have hostas, a bayberry bush and sand cherry bushes in the bed.  Any idea what this substance could be and how to treat it?
Thanks for your assistance.

Answer
Pam,
There are many fungi that would fit the description that you gave. Most of them are harmless, there are a few that can spell trouble for the plants.
I would ecommend collecting a sample and having analyzed by your local cooperative extension office. They can tell you if you need to worry and what steps you need to take in the maeantime.
Good luck.
