burning bush brown spots

Question
I planted a burning bush this spring and now it looks like there are brown spots on some of the leaves and in some cases the spot has actually gone through the leaf.  I live on Long Island and the shrub gets plenty of water and is planted in partial shade.  Any suggestions?

Answer
Valerie,
There are two possibilities, the euonymus may have leaf anthracnose or mites. Anthracnose is a disease that can be controled in the spring as the leaves are opening using a fungicide treatment. Mites will need to be sprayed for with a registered miticide to brek the life cycle. To determine if mites are the problem, put a piece of white paper under the leaves and shake the branch, if you see tiny red or black specks moving around, then you have mites.
In either case, I would recommend that you fertilize the shrub with a low nitrogen fertilizer to help strengthen the plant and maintain your watering.
Good luck.
