Soil Conditioner and Inkberry

Question
Stores in our area (Northeast Ohio) sell lime, limestone and gypsum to condition soil. when should I use one or the other.
My soil is all clay with about 1" of topsoil that I put on top. I am also surrounded by trees and lots of leaves which makes it acidic.
Question on Inkberry. I planted 3 inkberrys 2 years ago and now I see that there is a 4th coming out about 3 ft from one of them. Do they spread from seeds or what would cause one to sprout like that?

Thanks,
Bill

Answer
Bill,

As far as soil conditioners go, I would recommend using compost instead of the other products you mentioned. Compost will help to change the dynamics of the soil as well as add microorganisms that are essential to plant health.

Inkberries do spread by seed, so I would say that this fourth plant grew from one of the seeds that the birds missed.

Good luck.
