soil - type and amount

Question

lawn
Hello,
I have had sewage and cribbing work done in my yard (last fall)and now want to add soil to the existing area - which was dug up to a depth of about 20 ft approximately.
what type of soil should I order for planting ground cover and some garden area (black earth or topsoil?)and how do I determine how much I need?
thank you

Answer
Hi Judy, If this is going to be an elevated bed, then you local bulk soil company will have a garden mix that should work well.  If not elevated, spread top soil over the area and then till it into your existing soil for a uniform blend.  You want to try to avoid layers of unlike soil.  It causes water problems, inhibits deep root growth and often causes stress during temperature extremes.
How much soil depends on the size of the area and the desired depth.  Your soil company can help you with how much, just tell the dimensions.  Jim
