Arbs

Question
Hi:

I have about 95 arbs lining my property for the past 5 years or so.  There has been limited growth.  I would like them to grow taller and fuller to provide a natural sort of fencing around the property.

I have used "sticks into the soil a few times as well as Holly Tone granules 2-3 times.  They have been staggered ... never more than every 6-9 months.

My question is what can I do to be more proactive and is there a liquid spray, such as Miriacid/Miracle Grow that I can use specifically for these arbs?  I live in Northeast PA if that is helpful.

Answer
Andy,

There are many conditions that could exist on your property that would limit growth - poor drainage, shade, how they were planted, etc..

To maximize the Arbs growth, I would recommend starting them on a regular maintenance program with a tree care company in your area. The program should entail fertilization with mychorriazae and micro-nutrients as well as the normal nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. They should also be treated for mites, leafminer and bagworm through the spring and summer. Two companies that I would recommend that I believe are in your area are Bartlett Tree Experts and The Care of Trees. If you do not want to have a company come in, you can buy all the materials yourself and treat them.

Keeping the Arborvitae as healthy as possible will help to maximize their growth and your privacy.

Good luck.
