lilac and forsythia

Question
On one side of my lilac--which we planted last year and had no problems and on the same side of the forsythia--they are planted next to each with growth room---the tips of the new branches and leaves are curling--the forsythia actually has leaves now turning yellow where they are curled. What could be the problem???

Answer
Viola,

The problem with the plants would have to be cultural or there could be a problem with the soil. This is the only way that two different type plants could be effected.

Was there anything dumped there? soil contamination can cause this type of result. Has there been any disturbance in the area? Disturbing the soil could have damaged the roots, causing the curling.

I would recommend calling in a tree care company to test the soil for contamination and to inspect the area visually for any other problems.

Good luck,
Ed Gulliksen
