wisteria or boganvia

Question
I love my wisteria, it blooms three times a year. We have a home in palm dessert and would like to replace the bolganvia  with the wisteria. Will the wisteria require more attention or are they about the same maintenance?

Answer
Hello Maggie

Wow - lucky you - a Wisteria that blooms 3 times in one year!

It does usually need a little more attention than a Bougainvillea (I think this is what you mean by boganvia?).

All the books will tell you that Wisteria needs pruning twice a year:

In August after the first flowering is over the side shoots should be shortened to 4 buds and then in February the following year the shoots should be shortened again to 2 buds.

I certainly do this with my own Wisteria, but if your plant flowers happily 3 times a year - keep doing whatever it is you're doing!!
