Shade Tolerant Roses

Question
I would like to plant some climbing roses on the north side of my house. It is very shady there.
I read about one somewhere but now I can't find it. Can you help me?
Thank you,
Becky

Answer
Hi Becky-

It would help to know what part of the country you are from.  If you are from the warmer parts (where it doesn't freeze too hard in the winter time - like Houston or Florida or California) some good shade tolerant roses that are climbing would be: Buff Beauty, Penelope and Prosperity and Mutabilis (shrubs that can be used as climbers).  For colder areas: New Dawn would be a good choice.  Other shade tolerant climbers: Veilenblau, Zephirine Drouhin (Bourbon climber), Climbing Iceberg, Golden Showers. Most of the hybrid musk roses are very shade tolerant.  I've heard that Gloire de Dijon, and Reve d' Or is somewhat shade tolerant.  Also the ramblers Madame Alfred Carriere and Alberic Barbier are shade tolerant and can climb into trees.  You can buy most of these roses from www.chambleeroses.com, and www.antiqueroseemporium.com.

Hope this helps - have fun smelling the roses-
