pot size for rose tree

Question
My husband just bought me a Rosa mini tree for my birthday. I have no idea how to care for it. Do branches grow on the tree part that need to be removed? What size pot should I put it in? I am completely unsure what to do with this but just love it and want it to live as long as possible
thank you for any help you can give me
Sheila

Answer
branches normally will not grow on the stem(or trunk). remove them if they do. plant it in the ground or put it in a 20"+ or larger pot. if you keep it in the pot water like this.
put a saucer under the pot. water and let the plant sit in the excess water for 5-10 minutes. after that time pour off any excess water in the saucer. pick up the pot. it should feel heavy. don't water again until it feels considerably lighter in weight. outdoors check the plant everyday. watering frequency depends on many factors(sun exposure, type of plant, wind, day temps, etc.).
the timing of what needs to be done to your roses depends on where you live. i'm in southern NJ.
buy an inexpensive book(sunset, ortho, etc.) on rose care at your local garden center. quiz them on mini-tree rose care in your area while there.
for now.   fertilize twice a year(early spring-now & late spring(june-july). during the summer remove flowers after they start to fade by pruning back to the 1st 5-leaf branch or below the old flower. new red growth(flower production) will appear soon from this spot.
there are many type roses so care also depends on which type you have - grandiflora, hybrid tea, floribunda, miniature, climber, old english, hedge, groundcover, etc.
roses like lots of sunlite especially if planted in the ground.
good luck
