green bugs on knock outs

Question
Hey Lynnette, I am a novice gardener and have three knockout roses.  Last year something began eating the leaves and I thought the pruning this winterwould get rid of the problem and we would start new growth bug free. Yesterday I noticed thousands of bright green little bugs all over the leaves.  What are these little creatures? Are my carefree knockout roses not so carefree?

Answer
Knockout roses have become popular because they are very hardy and have good disease resistance, but they are still tasty to most bugs. As I don't know where you garden I can't identify the bugs for you, however insects are all controlled the same way and that is with an insecticide. Because they are eating the leaves you want a systemic insecticide that will kill them when they eat a piece of the rose leaf. Bayer puts out a good insecticide Rose and Flower Insect Control(sorry I can't remember the exact name) but gardeners say it is very good and not toxic to the environment.
Because insects usually lay eggs around the base of what they eat, don't forget to also spray all around the base of your rose bushes. Hope this helps.
