blooming to quick

Question
My roses bud beautifully.  Once they open, they spread quick and wide. Is this normal, can I slow the process to enjoy the blooms longer?  I think these are climbers if that matters.  I just recently put a trusle in the bed.  Also, they seem to grow up and out, nothing at the bottom.

Answer
There are mainly two things that make a rose open quickly or "blow" as it is called in rose language. One is that you are feeding the rose too much nitrogen and that is making the rose put out new growth quickly at the expense of making nice blooms. I doubt that. The other is cool weather when the buds start to open and then much warmer weather follows which makes the flowers open faster. There is also a third reason and that could be that the climber is one which normally does that with it's flowers. If it is then you can't change it. Watch to see if the flowers are better in the fall if they are then it is the weather causing it. If they do the same then that is the type of flowers the climber makes.
Climbers have a set habit. They either put out a few basal canes and then make their height by making laterals or stems from the main ones. Some climbers make a lot of basal canes like a tall bush. To get more canes from the base you have to prune them back hard when you first plant them and that makes them push out more growth from the base. Because your rose is doing so well, I wouldn't advise cutting back as it is too late to do it. The only thing you can do is plant a perennial or even another rose at the base to cover the bare legs. Hope this helps.
