spiney rose canes

Question
This is the second year my rose bushes have bloomed the wrong color. They were supposed to be Memorial Day and Sunset Celebration roses (a soft pink and pale orange large rose) but they bloomed one time this spring a tiny 6-7 petal dark red flower. Also after they bloom they start shooting out long smooth canes in all ditections that literally take over the plant. I have cut the smooth canes all back to the base 3 times in the last 4 months and have recieved no more blooms. It just puzzles me that all 5 of these have done this. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Answer
All roses are budded onto an undertock to give them more vigor. On most roses they use a climber called Dr. Huey. Dr. Huey is a double deep red rose. If the top modern rose is killed by a cold winter then the understock will grow and produce flowers.Dr. Huey only has one bloom. Your top rose has been killed and it is the understock that is growing.
