Rose of Sharon Bush wont bloom!

Question
We have a Rose of Sharon tree/bush that is located on the east side of our house, north side of our deck and gets full sun in morning till around 1 pm and in the last 3 summers we've had it, it gets tons of buds where you can see the red flower inside but they don't open.  I've tried Miracle Grow better bloom formula but I'm not sure what is going on.  It would be so beautiful if it would bloom!  I'm not sure if it needs a hotter sun...we had a professional landscaper plant it, so I would've thought he knew where to plant it.  By the way, we live in Central-Southern Michigan, 15 miles north of Lansing.  Thanks!!!

Answer
I only answer questions on roses but I think I know what is causing your problem with the shrub. there are two possible reason the buds won't open and by the way, this is a common problem with this plant. One Rose of Sharon is a greedy feeder and needs to be fertilized regularly such as every time you water using the fertilizer at half strength.
The bud drop could also be caused by gall midge. Place some buds in a sealable plastic bag. After a day or two, you may see the very small yellowish worm-like larva on the plastic. Control the midge affecting buds with Orthene sprays as needed. You are right in that this shrub loves full sun. It might be a wisdom to re-pant it in the spring where it would get lots of sunshine. Hope this helps.
