eaten roots

Question
I have a squirrel that lives in the front yard - I think he has decided to vacation in my back yard.  I went to water my roses this morning and one of them fell right over!  The roots were gone and there were chew marks on the stem, it was just barely sitting on the dirt.  When I pulled up the rose bush there was a nice big hole under it.  I have poured some granular poison in it, but can the bush be saved??  I like having wildlife in my yard but not when it starts eating my beautiful roses!

Answer
Squirrel's don't chew on roots or burrow under ground.  It sounds like you have a gopher.  And they are really hard to get rid off.  You can lay out poison, but they rarely eat it.  You can get an electronic device that emits a sound that they don't like from Lowe's.  The only way to save the rose bush is to put it back into the ground and start feeding it Super Thrive or a B1 solution, to promote root growth.  And because it is so late in the season, it might not make it through the winter, but it is worth a try.  Use the B1 or SuperThrive for the next few weeks after planting it back into the hole and start using it again in early Spring, weekly.  You need to start looking for things that will get rid of gopher's.
