Newbie to Roses

Question
Hello, I live in south eastern Ontario Canada, Gananoque to be exact. We just build  cedar gazebo and I am thinking of planting roses around it.  The flowerbed would face, north, south, east and west.  Could you recommend some roses I could possibly try to grown.  I have only tried roses once before years ago but had aphid problems and have shied away from them but am willing to try again.  I am drawn especially to red roses.  Do all roses have a wonderful scent?

Answer
Roses always look beautiful around any garden structure but a gazebo is perfect for roses. You have one of the best rose nurseries in Canada close by and that is one of the ways to get off to a good start in growing roses. Always buy your roses from a nursery that specializes in just growing roses. Then you will get top notch healthy rose plants which will do well for you. I think you are in zone 5 which is a good one to grow roses in. I get many of my roses from Palatine Roses and here is there web site address.

Roses are like humans and have blood lines. You know how hard it is to get a person with blond hair and green eyes, well it is the same in roses. To get a red rose gene combined with the fragrance gene, is very difficult to do. You can do it but often the rose has other faults and so you unable to sell it. Aphids are really not a problem because you can wash them off with a hose and when they fall to the ground they are too weak to get up on the rose again. Then the birds eat them like candy. As long as a rose gets 6 hours of full sun, it will be okay. Anything less and the rose won't be healthy because it needs the sun for strong, healthy growth. I will go on Palatines site and pick out the red roses that have a fragrance for you to select from and which will do well in your area.

HYBRID TEAS
Burgund 81...tall carmine red
Duftzauber...tall fragrant, one of the best
Liebeszauber...rich red fragrant VERY tall
Red Queen...medium tall a little fragrance

FLORIBUNDAS
Red Riding Hood

CLIMBERS
Amadeus...bright red, healthy, fragrant not a tall climber about 8 feet
Dublin Bay...deep red, grows more like a shrub to 8 feet

These are the best to start with because they have been proven to be healthy with no problems roses. Let me know how you get on and what you select.
Here is my website to help you select and also see what the roses look like.
