Knockout Rose in a planter

Question
I live in an urban loft in Birmingham, Alabama.  I have a raised planter that acts as a safety rail along the edge of the rooftop.  The planter is 14" wide by 24" deep, and is approximately 30' long.

I would like to plant Knockout Roses in this planter, but am concerned that I may not be able to "winter" them. Could I be successful?  If so, what is your recommendation for getting them through the winter.  Thanks!

Answer
Your winters are fine for Knock Out roses as they are hardy and will survive winters much colder than yours. The main problem with growing a rose in a container, is that the roots are above the ground. The soil around the roots in a garden setting protect the rose. I would go ahead and plant the roses but if you are concerned about the winter, just mulch the planter with wood chips or anything else you can get in your area. Also no fertilizer after the end of September and then you will be certain they will be okay.
