Spots on rose leaves

Question
I have used Google to see if I could find out what these spots on my friends roses were but I had no luck. The spots are a tan color with a moron to brownish ring around them and located on the leaves of entire plant. The spot don't occur in a particular area of the leaves either they are random. Would you now what they are?

Answer
Sort of hard to say accurately without seeing a picture of the spots as roses do get different ones. From your description it could be a couple of fungal problems. One it could be rose anthracnose which has small reddish brown small circular spots. In time the centre will dry out and turn grey and fall out. The spots are scattered on the rose leaf. Anthracnose appears in the springtime. The other is a well known one called black spot. These spots are larger and black with fuzzy edges and also have a yellow halo around them. Sometimes they will join up and look like a very large black patch. Black spot appears when it gets warmer in the early summer. Again from what you have described, it sounds more like rose anthracnose to me. Any spray with a fungicide in it  such as Orthos Rosepride with Funginex, will solve both problems for you.
