Winter care of Apricot Princess

Question
I have 5 lovely Apricot Princess roses, and want to keep them
alive thru the Wisconsin zone  4 B winter. Is there anything
special I need to do?

Answer
Apricot Princess is quite hardy but it still will need extra protection. The best way is to get some mulch, compost or soil (from another area of the garden not around the roses), and make a mound around the base up to 12 inches. Then if you get a nasty cold winter, this will protect the rose up to the 12 inches. All roses will come back in the spring form even just a few inches of cane so there is no need to worry about saving 12 inches of the rose's canes. Don't do this until the rose has dropped all it's leaves and the soil is hard. To do it sooner will just make a mini greenhouse an you don't want to activate the rose into growth. In your area never give a rose any fertilizer after the end of July and this will harden them off and make them stronger to go through your very gold winters.
