rosebushes

Question
QUESTION: after a rose blooms and dies, if you cut off the dead rose, will another rose eventually bloom there? Or do I just leave it alone and pull off the dead petals to make it look better?

ANSWER: The main purpose for a rose to bloom is to make a flower which the base of in time turns into a seed pod. Once the rose has made a seed pod then it doesn't have to bloom anymore. To encourage it to make another bloom you just snap the old dead flower off and then the rose will grow some more leaves to make another flower. To make a rose slow down for the winter, you stop taking the flowers off in the late fall.

QUESTION: Do I need to do anything special in the winter with it to keep it from freezing, or do they survive winter, and still be okay in the spring?

ANSWER: I don't know where you garden Sue so I don't know what type of winter you have. Protecting roses all depends of how nasty the winter is.

QUESTION: I'm in the Central Michigan area.  What is one way to possibly protect them?  Would covering them with buckets or bags help?

Answer
If you are growing modern hybrid teas then they will need protection during the winter. Many gardeners take soil from another part of the garden and build a mound of about 12 inches tall all around the base of the rose. Then they cut the rose back to about 18 inches. Finally they tie the canes together so they won't rock and disturb the roots in the winter winds. Climbers need to be tie to anything that will stop them from rocking. Alway view snow as a blanket because the roses don't mind the snow as it protects them from icy cold winds.
