Rose Care 101

Question
Hi Lynette I live in the Richmond, VA area and I just moved into a house where the previous owner planted a rose garden. I would love to maintain the garden, but I don't have a clue as to what to do. Thankfully, she left some tags on the roses. I have:
Don Juan Roses,High Hopes Roses & Melody Parfumme
Don Juan & High Hopes are on a trellis. I think I need to prune them and mulch the ground area. HELP! THANK YOU!

Answer
Well the previous owner must have known their roses as they left you some very good ones.
Don Juan is a deep red American bred climber with a strong fragrance. It does prefer a warmer climate than yours but because it has settled in already it will do well but just won't get as tall as it would in say California. It may get a little black spot but it won't effect it's vigour. You can spray with a fungicide called Funginex if you want to.
High Hopes is another good climber, it is from England and it also does very well. Has a nice fragrance and attractive pink flowers. Although it does have a main flush, you may not get a large second flush, but it will always have some flowers on it and it should be disease free. Climbers don't have to be pruned if you have the room for them. However if they outgrow their allotted space, then cut them back to fit in the early spring. Mulch the same way as the Grandiflora but use two handfulls of rose fertilier instead of one, all around the base. Always water a climber more than bush roses, especially if it gets hot in the summer.
Melody Parfumme is a mauve pink Grandiflora rose from France with a very strong perfume. This rose can easily grow to 5 feet tall. Because this Grandiflora can grow so tall, it should be pruned right back to 3 feet in the early spring just before they break out into growth and it will probably grow right back to 5 feet again. Finally sprinkle a handfull of any rose fertilizer (Miracle Gro is a well known and good one) all around the base. Because roses just love cool damp roots and because keeping roots rose cool cuts down on rose diseases, put a thick 6 inch mulch of anything they use in your area around the base too.
Hope this helps. Lynnette
