New curled, misshapen leaves on roses

Question
Zone 9; South Placer County, CA

3 of my 6 rose plants on one side of the yard have new leaf growth that is wrinkly & misshapen. One is a hybrid tea, two are English. Plants are 3 years old & well-established.  Roses on other side of yard are healthy & clear. What is wrong? What do I do for them? Thank you.

Answer
If your rose bushes are looking normal on one side of the bush but the other side of the bush has a problem, nine out of ten times, the problem is caused by a spraying of some kind. An example is someone spraying the lawn for weeds and the fine mist drifts over on the roses. The person spraying could be next door but there are so many cases where that is what has happened. If a person uses RoundUp, this will cause death if sprayed on a plant but will deform the plant leaves if it floats in the air and then lands on plant. Roses under normal conditions don't grow well on one side and then naturally have a problem on only one side of the bush. The rose may solve the problem itself and in time they could be producing healthy looking leaves. However if it continues to grow differently, then cut the canes back to the normal looking leaves and that should solve your problem. The fact that the rose is growing leaves tells me it isn't damaged that badly and will return to normal but it may take time or a pruning to do it.
