Boarder Plant

Question
Is it true that it never rains in Southern California? LOL. - Yes, which is why my sprinkler costs me so much on my water bill, LOL.

1. How much rainfall do you receive during the growing season(which is probably all year round in your zone). - Not much, but really not an issue w/ sprinklers.

2.What is your soil type? Is it hard clay, sandy, rocky, etc. - Sandy, we live by the beach.

3.How much sun will be on the location during a days time?8 hrs,10 hrs, etc. - partial sun and shade.  Maybe 4-6 hours of sun.

4.Do you want an evergreen plant or a flowering plant or both? - my wife likes flowering plants w/ color.  We already have too much greenery.

Thanks again.

Answer
I will put these in categories. They will all be perennials:
Remember all these will be spreaders,so plant them at least 3 feet from your driveway edge.

Groundcovers(Low and very low growers):1.Creeping Phlox-It stays green all year and blooms cover the whole plant in Spring with a VERY bright array of colors.Rose,Lavender,Blue<white
2.Sedum-This is a succulent and requires no water at all. There are many varieties.I like "Autumn Joy" and "Dragons Blood"(dark red), but there are many others.Blooms in fall.
3.Dianthus (deltoides)"Brilliant" (deep reddish pink.)
4.Hardy Verbena-This is a creeper that only grows to 4 inches and spreads about 3 feet.

Small Shrubs:1.Dwarf Azaleas,2.Spireas"Little Princess"and "Goldmound"(dwarfs)

Perennials(approx.10 to 12 inches in height)1.Dianthus barbatus(Sweet William) All varieties are brillant jewel
tones.2.Dianthus"Zing Rose" and "Baths Pink"(also called "pinks" (My personal favorite Dianthus).
3.Short Daylillies-"Stella D'Oro" (yellow) continuous bloomer.
4. Achillea(Yarrow). Some varieties are short.Pretty pastel blooms and ferny foliage.Summer bloom
5.Evening Primrose- This is a VERY rapid grower. It has beautiful pink flowers over the whole plant. Just remember to space them accordingly.I thin mine out about twice a year.

There are many more choices, but these are some I recommend.
Have fun planting!
