pokeweed

Question
This spring we had a plant start growing in our garden and just yesterday found out that it might be a perennial pokeweed.  What info do you have on this plant?  Does it need sun or shade?  Right now it is in sun and shade but too big for the area so we would like to move it to a larger area but are not sure exactly what we should do.  Thanks for any info you might be able to pass along.

Answer
Hi Marietta,
Thanx for your question.  I do not recommend allowing this plant to propagate.  It is an invasive weed and its berries are poisonous.  Once they are started, they are very difficult to control.  They have a thick tap root that goes deep into the ground.  You will probably break the root if you try to dig it up.  I've never tried to transplant one so I don't know if the plant will survive having its roots broken.  I know a new plant will come out of broken root.  I hope this helps.
Tom
