Canna Lillies taking over!

Question
I know this is not the type of question you are used to, but I need to know how to get rid of SOME of my Cannas.  I built a deck over some and they are growing up in between the wood slats.  Is there anything I can do to target a few to eliminate?

Answer
Laura,
First off, love your name!LOL! You have a very solveable problem. Just dig them up. That's it. Cannas are tubers and are planted very shallow like a common type Iris tuber. You can usually see the tubers on  or just below the soil surface. Take a sharp spade and go at it until you don't see any more tubers.
I kind of feel for you though if your deck is not off the ground high enough for you to actually stand upright while digging them up. If you have to get on your hands and knees,a sharp hoe or a good sturdy hand trowel may be easier for you. Normally though they are not difficult to dig up. If you actually like them and want to transplant them somewhere else just pick a spot where they wont take over. They need to be in full sun and planted very shallow just beneath the soil surface.Cut off most of the green foliage because they will be top heavy. Hold them securely down by using metal garden stakes shaped like a U so that they can root without being disturbed. They may start getting new foliage soon afterwards and then you can cut off the old foliage that will more than likely turn brown. They will bloom next year but you could be surprised if they bloom this year since they are very rapid growers.
Good luck on all your gardening projects and hope you enjoy that new deck!
