Transplant

Question
Chatham N.J.
I have a large number of Tiger Lilys the Iam going to move to a new area in my yard. When is the best time to do this and how should I prepair the plants?

Answer
Good evening, Leonard.

I hope I can help you with this problem - but I'm a little worried!

When people ask about Tiger Lilies, Leonard, they could mean two different plants.

Lots of people call daylilies "Tiger Lilies".  Other people call Lilium tigrinum "Tiger Lilies".

So which one are we talking about here, Leonard?

You can see a photograph of a Tiger LILY at "Garden Guides
-Tiger Lily" (www.gardenguides.com/flowers/bulbs/tiger.htm). This is a flowering Bulb?  It has large, speckled flowers and short leaves and it grows anywhere from 2-4 feet tall.

Daylilies have thick roots and long-stems.  The leaves are long and grasslike.  They only bloom for one day.  Many people call these Tiger Lilies.

If you want to transplant a Tiger LILY, you have to wait until late fall.  Probably October.  After the plants are slowing down and the flowers are completely finished.

If you want to transplant Daylilies, however, you can do that right now.

Make sure you water them every day for the firist week.  Take as much soil around the roots as you can.

If you have any questions, let me know.  Thank you for writing.
