Astilbe - why are the leaves dying?

Question
Recently planted some Astilbe (purple colour blooms) and, although the blooms still look fine, all the leaves around the base are withering and dying. Soaked before planting and have watered daily ... to no avail. Is this just the plant "bedding-in" or are we about to lose the plant? Any advice gratefully received. Cheers, David

Answer
Hi David,
Thanx for your question.  Yes, I think your plant is just getting used to its surroundings.  Make sure the soil is moist but not soggy and don't let the soil dry all the way out.  A little acidity is nice so use leaf mold, oak leaves or pine needles as a mulch.  I hope this helps.
Tom
