Seperating Mums

Question
QUESTION: I have several mums that are getting huge. When is a good time to separate and transplant them with killing them? Thanks

ANSWER: Not now, that's for sure.  Chrysanthemums should be divided in the Fall AFTER they flower or in the Spring BEFORE Summer is underway.  Trust me, you don't want to push this -- I decided I was going to divide my Alyssum Saxatile and I nearly killed everything.

Do you know the procedure for dividing Mums?  Let me know if you need help with that.  Thanks for writing.

QUESTION: Can you give me the procedure for dividing the mums. Thanks

Answer
I could go into detail, but like they say, one picture is worth a thousand words:

That's the Better Homes and Gardens website with a step by step cheat sheet on dividing Chrysanthemums.

Make sure you keep the new 'mums CAREFULLY watered after you pot them up (or plant in the ground).  Their root systems are barely developed and they need lots of water to make up with that.  Don't overwater, but keep them watered as needed.

If you're not clear, let me know, I'll be happy to elaborate.
