winter maintainace for hybiscs trees

Question
I live in Toronto, Canada and have brought 3 hybiscus trees indoors for the winter but they are not doing well. The leaves are dry and keep falling off. I have put them in the shower, misted them and water them once a week but it has not helped. Is there anything else that I can do to help them survive the winter?

Answer
Hi Marlene,
Thanx for your question.  Your hibiscus are probably alright they are just going dormant for the winter and will tend to look pretty bad.  A lot of this has to do with the change in light intensity.  Just water them enough to keep them alive (once a week) and do not feed any fertilizer, etc.  Keep them in the sunniest place you can find.  When you return them outdoors in the spring (after the last frost) place them in a shaded area for about 10 days so they won't get sunburn and then return them to a sunny spot in the yard.  They will recover.  I hope this helps.
Tom
