hydrangea care in Tucson Arizona

Question
Hydrangea are so gorgeous. I just bought some at Basha's, pink and one white. How do I care for them in Tucson. Do I keep them inside the house or will the porch work until the heat of summer comes?

Answer
Hi Lil,
The kind you bought at the grocery store (isn't Basha's a grocery store?  I live in Phoenix at one time.) are florist grad hydrangeas so treat them like a houseplant because they are probably not hardy below zone 9.  Plus, it will eventually get too hot for them.  I would put them out on the porch where they will not get constant sun but maybe some morning sun and then protected in the afternoon until evening.  You will need to make sure they do not dry out which means watering them probably once a day once it gets in the 80s and 90s.  They'll also need a periodic treatment with Miracid or some other acidic fertilizer, especially if you have a blue hydrangea otherwise it will turn pink but all hydrangeas benefit from the acidic fertilizer.  Once it is consistently over 95 degrees, I would move them back indoors until fall.  I hope this helps.
Tom
