azalea care in Tucson AZ

Question
I received a bright pink azalea as a gift.  I have replanted it in a bigger pot.  Is it possible to put it outside in Tucson either in the pot or in the ground, or should it remain a houseplant?  Thank you.

Answer
Hi Cindy,
Thanx for your question.  Most azaleas received as gifts are called Florist's azaleas and most are not hardy in frost-prone areas.  In your area, you could probably get away with growing it outdoor but you would have to protect it on those chance days when you all receive your light occasional frosts.  To plant outdoors you'll need to amend that alkaline desert soil with lots of composted cow manure and peat mixed win equal portions with the local soil.  Amend and side dress every year with composted cow manure to help maintain the organic nature of the soil and the acidity.  Fertilize with acidic fertilizers like Miracid.  Put the plant somewhere where it will be safe from Arizona's scorching afternoon sun.  You'll want to have the plant shaded from about noon to 6pm.  Morning and evening sun should be ok.  You'll need to water the plant frequently because of the dry air and low rainfall.  Now, one thing you may want to consider.  This plant is not really a good idea for an Arizona garden.  It's water requirements are high and in an area where water is an important and  sparse commodity I would not recommend trying to propagate this plant as an outdoor plant.  Here's a link to the American Azalea Society that will help you care for the plant as a potted plant.

I used to live in Phoenix many moons ago.  Anyway, I hope this helps.
