Weeds and compost

Question
Should I put compost in and around my plants now or wait till spring?  Also, can I kill nasty creepy crawley  weeds with vinegar and alchol without harming already planted tulip bulbs and regular plants?  Thank-you
Marcia

Answer
Hi Marcia,
Thanx for your question.  Generally, you don't want to fertilze at the end of the growing season unless you're in frost-free or partial-frost-free zones like California, the Deep South, Florida, Texas, Arizona, Hawaii, Guam, Puerto Rico, the US VI.  So, I would wait until Spring.  I would not use vinegar or alcohol near any plants I want to keep.  If you must use an herbicide, I would recommmend Preen which prevents the germination of annual weed seeds.  It does not kill existing weeds or perennial weeds that have gone dormant.  One thing you can do is put a good mulch down around your plants and this will help keep (not completely eliminate) weeds down.  I use cypress bark and have had fair results.  I hope this helps.
Tom
