boxwoods and clematis plants

Question
Two part question:
I planted many boxwoods around my patio and I would like to know how to maintain them. Unfortunately, we lost some they went brown. We had a lot of rain and not alot of sun or heat this past summer. How do I maintain them so they get full and bushy? Do I fertilize and when and how often.

Part 2
How do I maintain clematis plants? I missed planting this fall. When in spring is a good time so I might be able to enjoy blooms.
Thank you for your time and expertise.

Answer
Hi Susan,
Thanx for your question.  Here is a link to Virginia Tech which has some excellent information regarding the questions you had on boxwoods.  Boxwoods are fairly easy to grow and maintain a nice hedge.  A good side-dressing of composted manure will help the boxwoods grow faster.

As far as the clematis go, unless you live in Minnesota or a cold mountainous area or upper New England, Great Lakes, you still have time to plant the clematis just mulch it heavily.  I would use cedar or cypress mulch.  Otherwise, keep it in a pot in a cold garage for the winter and plant out after the last frost next spring.  I hope this helps.
