Azaleas and Rhododendrons

Question
I have just bought Miracle Gro soluble plant food and on the instructions it says you can use the garden hose spray, but this will mean using tap water and I was under the impression that you had to water these plants with rain water only. Which is correct please I dont want to lose my plants.

Answer
Hi Julie,
Thanx for your question.  Of course rain water would be the best route to go but tap water generally, will not harm your plants.  The solids in the water are quickly leached out of the soil so I wouldn't worry about that.  Use Miracid or other acidic fertilizer for your azaleas, rhododendrons and camelias.  You can also use side dressings of peat.  I lived in the South of the USA for several years and people watered their azaleas with tap water.  I hope this helps.
Tom
