stella dora daylillies

Question
Hi,

Our stella dora daylillies have grown so big.  We would like to either move them to a new area or split them and move that to another area.  When is the best time to do this?  Also, I have never split a plant before is there a proper way to do this without killing the plant?  Thank you.

Answer
Hi Elaine,
Thanx for your question.  The best time to move and separate lilies is in the late summer or early fall.  Dig the clumps up and gently pull plants apart.  You can easily tell where the separate plants are by the way the fans separate.  Pull these gently apart, don't rip them.  They will eventually come apart as you gently tug on them. When replanting them, plant them in a hole that is spacious enough to accommodate their roots.  Make a mound in the middle of the hole and set the crown of the plant on this and spread the roots outwardly.  Cover with about 1 inch of soil.  Here is a link to the American Hemerocallis Society (Daylily) that I think you will find useful.

I hope this helps.
