Cala Lillies

Question
My cala lilies are in pots and they have bloomed.  The blooms have developed big pods (seed looking like things)which are about the size of a pea, can you tell me what they are, can I plant them if I harvest them?

Thanks,

Mary Ann

Answer
Hi Mary Ann,
Thanx for your question.  What you are describing is a seed pod and the "peas" are the seeds.  Yes, you can harvest these after they dry up a bit and you can plant them 1/2 inch deep in moist potting soil.  They will sprout in a couple of weeks.   They will not result in an exact match of your current plant because of hybridization but it is still fun to plant the seeds and one never knows what one will get.  The seedlings have a high light requirement so place under 40watt lights (about 8 inches above) or outdoors if all danger of frost has passed (place in the shade for 10 days first and then direct sunlight).  I hope this helps.
Tom
