identifying a purple bush

Question
I've seen a group of purple bushes  flowering every year at a place of business in my town. When inquiring on the  name of these beautiful  bushes, I was told they were "Old English Asters" (as far as he could tell) and could not be purchased anymore but I could have a cutting. Please tell me what you know about these. We're in northern Indiana and these bloom in the fall. Thank you.

Answer
Hello Kathy

It is difficult to identify a plant from a description, I'm afraid - could you post a picture of two showing as much detail as possible - flowers, leafs, over-all plant, plus an indication of height/spread?

I don't think I've ever heard the term 'Old English Aster', although there are dozens of species and there are some which are known as 'sub-shrubs', but these usually grow very low to the ground and I have to say that I have never come across one.
