liriope berries

Question
My friend just gave me a bunch of berries from her monkey grass. I want to start from seed /berry in a seed starting cell kit. Is this possible to do and how do I do it?

Answer
Hi Richard,
Thanx for your question.  Liriope is Liriope muscari.  Monkey grass is something different, Ophiopogon japonicus and also known as Mondo grass.  Both are not true grasses but members of the lily family.

Liriope is difficult to germinate.  First, make sure you remove all of the pulp from the seeds.  They will germinate in 6-8 weeks at temperatures of about 80F or 25-26C.  Plant the seeds about 1/4 deep in each cell in seed starting soil or potting soil.  Keep the seeds warm  These seeds do not require cold stratification (putting in the fridge or leaving outdoors for the winter...).

I hope this helps.
Tom
