Gardenias are evergreen shrubs and trees.  They don't die down in the fall and they don't loose their leaves.  They flower every year.  

The important thing to remember is that they absolutely need an acid soil or they will die.  If you don't know whether or not your soil is acid, you can get a soil testing kit from any garden center - just following the instructions on the pack.
