aliens taking over my Oak Tree??

Question

alien thing
What are these things please. I thought maybe they were wasp galls, but am not so sure.. I don't mind them using the tree as a host, however, don't want it to kill my oak as it is REALLY large and beautiful! I have attached a photo- as you can see they are kinda sorta round but have these almost root looking things growing out of them.
Any assistace is aprecited.

Answer
Rebecca:
This is an insect gall called a horned oak gall. Caused by a small wasp that lays an egg on the twig.  They are hard and can weaken the branches when they get big.  Usually they don't significantly impact the overall health of a mature tree.

Steve
