CLIMBING HYDRANGEA

Question
Re: 7-8 year old plant    I live in South-Central PA (Harrisburg)  I had the plant for 4-5 years %26 it did not flower %26 I thought perhaps it did not get enough sun.  I  gave it to my daughter in Syracuse NY.  It is planted in full sun at the base of a tree.  Growing well, still no flowers.

Do you have any advice?  suggestions?     Thank you

Answer
Hello Dorothy

OK - two problems here.  Hydrangeas prefer a dappled shade and lots of water.  Being right at the base of a tree means that the shade is probably dense and the hydrangea is being starved of nutrients and, most importantly, getting no water.

Moving the plant away from the base of the tree and replanting it in a shady position where it gets plenty of water when it rains will help.  During its first year in its new position water well in dry spells.  A good feed with a liquid or organic fertilizer high in nitrogen in June/July next year may help with the flowering problem.

The fertilizer you need should be easily obtained at any garden center.
