Iris Bulb Storage

Question
I from Northwest Rhode Island and moving locally soon.  Would my Iris bulbs survive if I dug them up and stored them.  If so, what would be the process? Thanks!

Answer
Hello Karen

Your iris tubers should be alright packed into a half and half mix of sand and compost for one winter.

Check each tuber over for rot or 'squishy' bits and discard any that show these signs.  Put the rest in  a shallow tray in a frost free place for the winter.  Check occasionally and if any tubers look dry and wrinkled plunge them into tepid water for an hour or two until they plump up again, then repack into the sand/compost mix.

Plant out into their new location next May/June.
