Perennial Hibicus

Question
I live in Missouri and am trying to find perennial hibiscus plants. I have only grown the annual type and absolutely love them. Can you recommend what type and where to purchase? Thank You

Answer
Hi Nadine,
Thanx for your question.  I live in the Kansas City area on the Kansas side and have grown perennial, hardy hibiscus off and on for years.  They're easy to find.  You can go to any major nursery and find potted plants ranging in price from $6 or $7 for a small plant to $25 or more for a large shrub.  The botanical name is Hibiscus moscheutos.  Here are some on-line vendors that I have found to be reputable.  Westlake Ace Hardware often has the plants in their small nurseries in the Spring.  The big box stores, Walmart but we prefer to try to find them through smaller, independent nurseries but it's your choice.  ;o)

Perennial hibiscus is also easily grown from seed.  I've done it several times.

Google Hibiscus moscheutos, Hardy Hibiscus for more ideas.  Perennial hibiscus will not have the shiny leaves of tropical hibiscus.  I hope this helps.
