reliable books on orchids

Question
QUESTION: What are some good reference books on growing orchids? I just returned from Malaysia with several bottles of different varieties of orchid seedlings, and thought I would try my hand at potting them.

ANSWER: Courtney, I recommend the book "Home Orchid Growing" by the late Rebecca Tyson Northen published by Prentiss Hall Press. There are several sections covering most aspects of growing seedlings.  Since there are several editions of this book, you should be able to locate a copy.  If not, let me know.  Wish you well on a challenging adventure.

QUESTION: Thank you for answering my question so promptly! I have a couple more for you.Are all the editions pretty much equal, or is the newest one better? Is this the one printed in 1990? I am having trouble finding a 4th(?) edition for sale.

Answer
Courtney, the 1990 edition is the fourth and, I believe most recent, edition.  It differs little from the third edition published in 1970.  If you google "Home Orchid Growing" you should be able to find some good deals for purchase if you can't find either of these editions at the library or a local bookstore.  If you live near an orchid society, you could attend one of their meetings and a member may have a copy he/she can loan you.  If you don't know where the nearest orchid society meets, you can google "The Orchid Mall" and find a list of orchid societies.
