roots of the orchid

Question
My orchid died but I cut the leaves off and it is pushing out new leaves. I would like to start them but I am not sure what the roots look like Thank you for taking my Question.

Answer
Darlene, thanks for your question. I'm assuming that you have a phalaenopsis orchid (otherwise known as the moth orchid).  If I understand your question, you cannot start new orchid plants from cuttings. You should, however, repot your plant.  To do so, obtain a hobby bag of fir bark based orchid potting mix and soak a portion of it.  After it is soaked, pour this through a collander or 1/4 inch mesh to strain out the soil-like particles.  While it is soaking, unpot your plant and discard the old potting mix. Remove any "mushy" roots as these are dead.  Retain the healthy roots which are firm and turn green when wet.  Only repot the healthy roots. Be sure to repot into a pot that has lots of drainage holes so that the repotted plant and fresh potting mix allow water and air to pass freely through the potting mix. Do not allow the pot to stand in water.  Feel free to ask follow-up questions, if any.
