are there different varieties of sphagmum moss?

Question

moss?
Hi there!
One of my orchids (nelly isler) desparately need transplanting as the media it was in (sphagmum moss) was rotting.  I could find the blond new zealand sphagmum moss but found this "canadian sphagmum moss".  I transplanted my orchid but looking at this moss, I am not sure if it is sphagmum moss and will it do harm to my orchid.  Do you know if this is okay?

many thanks.

Answer
Hi Gina,

I do not use sphagnum moss for my orchids so I am relaying information I have heard and read by others who do use it.

One of the best sphagnum moss for orchids is the New Zealand moss, the second best is Chilean moss.  The Canadian moss is a distant third choice.  Why?  According to the reports, both the New Zealand and Chilean moss are normally used as live moss while the Canadian moss is more or less dead moss and will tend to rot sooner.

Also, all moss will last for only a year or so and needs to be replaced to prevent root rot.  When using moss, it is best to not pack it too tightly in the pot.

Hope this has helped.
