The Different Varieties of Damson Trees

Damsons are grown mainly for use in the kitchen. They have a rich flavor and are used for making jams, pies and crumbles. The damson tree is a deciduous tree which grows easily in cold climates. These trees do not need pruning once they are established. These trees are an excellent addition to the orchard. These trees produce good crop for many years. There are different varieties of damson trees which produce small and large fruits. Varieties

There are different varieties of damson trees. The Blue Violet damson tree is a traditional damson tree which ripens earlier than the other varieties of damsons. The fruits have a sweeter flavor and can be both eaten fresh and used in the kitchen. The fruits of this tree are very easy to pick as the fruits fall from the tree when the wind blows. Delma damson tree is the most long-lived variety of damson trees. The original Delma damson tree is more than 150 years old. The damsons of this tree are also sweeter when compared to other varieties. The heaviest cropping variety of damson trees is the Farleigh damson tree. The tree bears abundant fruits. The most widely planted variety is the Merryweather damson tree. The fruits of this tree are larger than the other varieties and resemble a small plum. These fruits can be eaten fresh or can be used as a substitute for plums. But the stone of this fruit is not easily parted from the flesh. The Shepherds Bullace damson tree bears fruits that are extremely sharp in flavor. This tree is very tough and the cropping is very good. The Shropshire Prune is a northern English damson whose fruit has an astringent richness and thus this fruit is mainly used for cooking.
