yellow leaves on phalaenopsis

Question
I've read other q&a's regarding yellowing leaves, and think may be my situation may be different(but maybe not!).  I have 2 phals whose leaves have suddenly turned yellow.  The oddity is that they both have healthy new flower shoots.  These are well established 2-3 year old plants.

Answer
Part of the answer depends upon where these leaves are located on the plant.  It is normal for the lowest (and hence the oldest) leaves to turn yellow and fall off.  I wouldn't be concerned if this is the case-- especially if you have three or more leaves on the same plant that are healthy.  You didn't mention whether or not you repotted these plants during the time you had them.  Orchid potting mix can deteriorate over time leading to root damage.  If this is the case then I recommend you reduce watering and repot in fresh orchid potting mix after it flowers. Leaves can be lost if root damage is present.  I have seen plants that have lost all of their leaves and still flower.  In such a case, flowering can be seen as the plant's last attempt to prodcue seed for a future generation.
