ice orchids

Question
My mom wants to know when re potting, Can you separate the plant when it has two stems, Or is it all one bulb.

Answer
Keith, it is unfortunate that some marketers adopted the technique of watering a plant with ice cubes. These have come to be known as "ice orchids" which is not descriptive of the type of orchid.  The ones I have seen are phalaenopsis orchids.  The stems to which you refer are most likely flower spikes and are an integral part of the plant.  Unlike some types of orchids, phalaenopsis orchids can not be split into two or more plants so repot it as a single plant.  A plant that consists of canes or pseudobulbs would not be a phalaenopsis orchid and, if that is the case, my advice would be different.  If you can send a picture, I can verify whether you have phalaenopsis orchid or some other type.  Be sure to use a commercial orchid potting mix when repotting and to use a pot with lots of drainage holes.  Wet the potting mix before use as it should contain fir bark which, when dry, repels water.
