orchid problems after lack of watering and new sprout

Question
I was out of town for a month and my plant sitter did not water two of my orchids during that time. Both of these had been growing healthy stems but had not bloomed,  prior to my departure.  Now both have twisted leaves at the top. Of course these poor orchids are now getting watered.  I just noticed that on both of these, at the base of this years stems, are new sprouts coming out. Are these new stems? Does this mean that the stems with the twisted leaves at the top will not bloom?

Answer
Karen, I'm going to assume that the orchids you have are phalaenopsis (ie moth) orchids.  If this assumption is in error, we'll have to revisit the question.  In order for phalaenopsis orchids to bloom, they must send up a bloom spike. This is probably what you are referring to as stems. If the leaves are growing on the stems, these could be plantlets growing in the place of flowers.  The new sprouts may be new roots.  I could be more helpful, if you could send a picture so I can visualize what you have.  Thanks.
